Within the Process Mining feature, it is possible to run simulations based on the data stored within the event logs to increase the amount of valuable information available for users to perform the Process Discovery procedure. The mix of these two features gives a great advantage to analysts as it displays the results of simulating the discovered process, providing an idea of the behavior it would have if imported. This offers the possibility of changing the abstraction settings to obtain a new process with the desired behavior. These steps are key for the optimization of a company's processes.
To use the simulation feature based on Process mining, first, you need to discover the initial process by importing the event log and using the abstraction settings to obtain it, this process is explained in detail in the previous article.
Once a process is abstracted go to the simulation view by selecting the Run simulation button on the ribbon.
Within this view are all the options to run a simulation.
Unlike our usual simulation in which you manually enter the time spent on each activity and the gateways' routing, in this case, the processing times and probability distributions are taken from the event log (the average time for the activities and the routing percentages for the gateways). To run the simulation click the Run button. Take into account that simulations performed based on Process Mining are deterministic. The simulation runs with the default amount of tokens: 1000.
When finished the results are displayed as with any other simulation.
Additionally, when saving the process discovered using Process Mining, the simulation parameters, i.e. the processing times and probability distributions, are saved on each element for future simulations.
